Frequently Asked Questions

Peace & Protection

What types of dogs do you accept?

We only welcome dogs who thrive in group play environments. There are no caveats or exceptions. By curating a community of well-socialized dogs, we create a calm, safe, and joyful culture where guardians can focus on enrichment rather than conflict management. This is what allows dogs at the ranch to enjoy more freedom, richer play, and deeper rest than in a typical commercial kennel.

How do you keep dogs safe during their stay?

Once admitted, every safeguard is in place to protect your dog’s wellbeing. The ranch is engineered for safety with a conservative dog-to-staff ratio, secure fencing, double-gated entries, and wide sightlines. Our guardians are trained to actively supervise play and rotate groups as needed, while direct veterinary access and clear emergency protocols provide added assurance. These measures ensure dogs can enjoy open play with confidence and protection.

What vaccinations do you require?

We require Rabies, DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus), and Bordetella. Vaccination records must be current and verified with your veterinarian before arrival; “current” means boosters completed per your vet’s schedule. Additional vaccines or titer proof may be required for specific services or travel and will be listed at booking. Unverified or incomplete records can delay or cancel admission.

Why do you require reference checks and videos?

Because one antisocial or aggressive dog changes the atmosphere of the entire community. It pulls our guardians’ attention toward managing conflict instead of creating enriching experiences, and it diminishes the joy of the other dogs. Our admissions steps are designed to keep that risk outside the four walls of the ranch, ensuring that every dog who joins contributes to a calm, safe, and joyful culture. The process itself is seamless and takes less time than most commercial kennels, yet it is far more effective at identifying and filtering out dogs who aren’t suited for group play.

Why do you verify the identity of dog owners?

Every safeguard we use is designed to protect your dog’s experience. Verifying identity ensures that health, vaccination, and behavioral information comes from accountable sources, and it discourages unsuitable applications before they ever reach the ranch. This step preserves the calm, safe, and joyful culture that defines the community. We use Jumio, the same secure system trusted by banks and airlines, so the process feels effortless for you and dependable for us. The only information we receive is whether the name you provide matches the name on the government-issued identification — nothing more. If you tell us your name is John Smith, we know you are actually John Smith.

What physical infrastructure ensures my dog will be safe?

The ranch is purpose-built for safety. Outdoor play areas are fully fenced, with double-gated entry and secure barriers throughout. Property perimeters are monitored 24/7 with automated threat alerts if a dog attempts to tunnel or if an unauthorized person is spotted near the boundary. Dens are private, ventilated, and designed for calm recovery between activities. Shuttles use crash-tested crates inside climate-controlled Mercedes Sprinter vans equipped with GPS and monitoring systems. We also maintain more conservative dog-to-staff ratios than most commercial facilities to ensure constant oversight. Every element of the physical environment is engineered to protect dogs while allowing them the freedom to move, play, and rest safely.

How is my dog monitored and supervised at all times?

Dogs are under constant supervision through a blend of people and technology. We maintain lower staff-to-dog ratios than most commercial facilities so handlers can actively observe play groups, body language, and energy levels throughout the day. Each dog wears a collar beacon that continuously tracks their location on property, while perimeter systems run 24/7 with automated alerts if a dog attempts to tunnel or if an unauthorized person approaches. Shuttle vans are equipped with GPS tracking, cameras, and climate monitoring, and inside the ranch all routines and checks are logged through our workflow system to ensure every step is completed on schedule.

Do you accept all breeds, or is admission based on behavior?

Admission is based on behavior, but we are also bound by insurance requirements. Every dog must pass our health and temperament screening to join the ranch community. If a breed is excluded by our insurance carrier, we are unable to accommodate, even if the individual dog is well-mannered. If this is the case, we will provide you with recommendations of other facilities that may be able to host your dog.

Health & Safety

How are meals, supplements, and medications handled?

Dogs are always fed individually in their private den. You may choose one of three options for meals: send your dog’s own food with them, have us provide the high-quality food available at the ranch, or ask us to purchase your dog’s usual food so you don’t have to manage the logistics of packing. All feeding instructions are collected during the onboarding process to ensure accuracy. Nutritional supplements—such as vitamins or probiotics—can be added as directed, and we log every administration. If your dog requires medication, our trained team administers it according to your instructions, whether pills, drops, or injections.

What does a typical day look like for my dog?

Dogs spend an average of eight to ten hours each day outdoors in expansive play fields across our agricultural ranch, immersed in nature where they can run, explore, and socialize in carefully matched groups. Feeding times, medical schedules, and enrichment activities guide the rhythm of the day, with breaks in the residential quarters where climate control, fresh air circulation, and clean bedding provide a restorative reset. This balance of nature-driven play and restorative rest keeps every dog healthy, relaxed, and content.

How do you accommodate older, anxious, or special-needs dogs?

We only admit dogs whose needs we can support safely and consistently. For older, anxious, or special-needs dogs, we design their day around comfort and security: smaller playgroups, more rest breaks, and one-on-one staff attention when needed. Our staff are trained to read stress signals and intervene early, and every adjustment is logged in our system so care is consistent across shifts. If a dog’s needs fall outside our tested protocols, we will not admit them — because our commitment to safety and well-being always outranks revenue or clout.

What health and cleanliness standards do you use?

Health and hygiene are held to the same standard as safety. Every dog must be current on Rabies, Bordetella, and DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) vaccinations, verified directly with their veterinarian. The ranch is cleaned daily with veterinary-grade products, parasite prevention is routine, and high-grade HVAC systems ensure constant fresh air and circulation. Residential quarters are designed for comfort yet easy to reset, allowing dogs to get muddy outdoors while always returning to a clean, refreshed space for meals and rest. Veterinary care is available whenever needed, either through telehealth consultations or immediate transit.

Experience & Culture

What are the qualifications fo the guardians on property?

Our guardians are dedicated caretakers who come to the ranch through the lens of hospitality. Each has a track record of responsibility and a genuine love for dogs. We train them to read canine body language, manage group dynamics, and run deliberate play–rest cycles — skills that matter most for dogs who are well-adapted to social play and comfortable meeting new people and dogs. Their focus is enrichment, safety, and creating the joyful culture that sets the ranch apart.]

How do you ensure dogs get adequate attention?

Your dog is cared for by a team trained in canine behavior, group dynamics, and emergency response. We also keep a more conservative dog-to-staff ratio than most kennels, so every guest receives close attention. What makes us different is that the main characters here are not our staff. They are the thoughtfully designed elements of the ranch and the well-socialized dogs who share it. Our role is to support that environment. We guide dogs calmly and humanely, using positive reinforcement and careful observation. The result is a culture of safety and harmony where the property and the pack shape the experience.

What kinds of activities and enrichment do dogs enjoy?

Dogs spend most of the day outdoors, rotating through large play fields, shaded rest areas, and water features designed for safe exploration. Supervised off-leash play includes running, chasing, and social interaction in curated groups, along with enrichment such as agility-style challenges and scent games. Dogs come inside only to eat and rest according to the feeding schedule you prescribe, before returning outside for the next activity block. The overall experience is most akin to a sleepaway camp—structured, active, and balanced with calm recovery—so every dog has the freedom to play, explore, and recharge safely.

Can I drop by to tour the facility without an appointment?

We welcome tours by appointment only. Surprise visits disrupt dogs’ routines and create avoidable safety and welfare risks. Book a guided tour and we’ll show you play areas, residential quarters, and safety systems while giving you our full attention; tours are scheduled to avoid busy periods so dogs stay relaxed and Guardians can host safely.

Why don’t you allow dogs on tours of the facility?

Your dog’s first trip to the property is their first stay with us. For safety we allow owner-only tours before admission because unassessed dogs create stress and avoidable risk for dogs already here. Every dog must complete health and temperament screening and be approved before any on-site visit; once approved your dog’s first on-site visit will be the start of their first stay and they’ll join supervised activities thereafter.

Where will my dog sleep?

Your dog rests in a private, minimalist suite designed for peaceful recovery, where every trace of the day’s play is swiftly refreshed. Each suite features a thoughtfully engineered bed that provides support, temperature regulation, and easy cleanliness, while quiet surroundings, controlled climate, and attentive supervision ensure restorative rest.

Do you provide webcam access to my dog?

Our entire facility is monitored by 24/7 surveillance, but the feeds are not available to customers. Public webcams are inconsistent with our values. Safety and security at Open Sky Dog Ranch come from our investments in technology and infrastructure, the Guardians we hire, and the way we selectively screen the dogs who join us — not from a livestream. Instead, you receive curated updates — photos, videos, and notes — that reflect genuine care without turning your dog’s stay into a performance.

Why do the rooms appear small?

The rooms are designed for rest and recovery, not all-day living. Dogs are den animals by nature — they feel secure and relaxed in spaces that are cozy, quiet, and free from overstimulation. At the ranch, dogs spend most of their day outdoors in large play fields, with rooms reserved for calm meals and restorative sleep. In many commercial facilities, rooms may be larger, but that is often where a dog spends most or all of their stay. At the ranch, rooms are intentionally kept simpler so they serve their true purpose: recovery, cleanliness, and peaceful alone time between adventures.

How will you keep me updated on my dog?

Our team provides daily updates with photos, videos, and notes about your dog’s day, delivered with the same care and attention to detail that define their experience at the ranch, so you always feel informed and connected.

Transportation

How does the shuttle service work?

Our shuttle provides door-to-door service across the Bay Area. We do not enter homes or apartment buildings — someone must bring your dog curbside to our van at the scheduled time. Pickups and drop-offs are arranged during non-rush hour periods to ensure predictable timing, with after-hours options available upon request. Our facility is located in a beautiful, quiet agricultural town, and part of being a good neighbor is minimizing traffic to and from the property. For this reason, we personally transport dogs using our fleet of vehicles to and from the ranch.

Is using the shuttle service required?

The shuttle service is mandatory because it preserves the two conditions that make the ranch possible: harmony with our neighbors and consistency for the dogs. In a quiet agricultural community, we limit inbound traffic to employees, our shuttle fleet, and a handful of scheduled tours — a discipline that protects the setting we inhabit. At the same time, synchronized arrivals and departures prevent the disruption that comes with staggered drop-offs, keeping routines intact, the pack stable, and staff fully focused on care. What might seem restrictive is in fact the structure that enables safety, calm, and reliability at scale.

How do you keep dogs safe on the shuttle?

Each dog travels in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, secured in an Impact Dog Crate inside a climate-controlled cabin designed for comfort as well as safety. GPS tracking and telematics monitor every journey in real time, while eye-tracking software ensures our drivers remain focused on the road. These multiple layers of protection create a transport experience that is safe, reliable, and reassuring for both dogs and their families.

Why are dogs transported in crates while in the shuttle?

Our first priority during transit is that your dog arrives and departs the ranch safely. Dogs travel in individual crates because it is the most reliable way to protect them on the road. Crates prevent jostling and unsafe interactions, and they provide each dog with a secure, personal space during the ride. Our vans are climate-controlled, and every crate is sized for comfort so dogs can stand, turn, and rest easily. This approach follows the same standards used by airlines, veterinary transport associations, and service dog organizations worldwide — because it keeps dogs safe, calm, and secure from pickup to drop-off. Crates also make loading and unloading safer, ensuring there is no chance of a dog slipping loose in a parking lot or near traffic.

Reservations

What is the cost of boarding, and what does it include?

Boarding is $85 per night for members and includes daily play, meals, nutritional supplements, and medical administration. Roundtrip curbside shuttle service is available for $65, with transportation provided in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans equipped with climate control, GPS tracking, and secure Impact Dog Crates.

How long does it take to make a reservation?

The reservation process takes about 25 minutes of active work, but we will let you know whether there is a potential fit in less than five minutes. It is a multi-step system designed to be thorough but seamless, and it can be completed entirely online without the need to visit the ranch in advance. For owners of well-socialized dogs, the process feels straightforward and even enjoyable. For other dog owners, the process will feel more taxing — and that is by design.

How long must my dog remain on property?

We require a four-day minimum stay. Think of it as a sleep-away camp: time for dogs to settle in, build confidence, and for our guardians to establish a relationship with them. This isn’t a kennel stay to be endured — it’s an opportunity for your dog to indulge in freedom, play, and enrichment too often missing from daily life.

What happens if my dog isn’t a good fit for the ranch community?

If a dog proves to be dog-aggressive or human-aggressive, they will not be introduced into the community and will instead experience a safe, quarantined stay for the remainder of their reservation. In these cases, your membership fee is refunded in full, and we will help you identify other facilities that may be better suited for your dog’s needs in the future. Open Sky Dog Ranch is intentionally selective so that the dogs who do attend enjoy a calm, safe, and joyful experience.

Can I visit the ranch before booking, and what if I can’t?

We host a limited number of families on property because our guardians’ primary focus is caring for the dogs, not hosting tours. This approach keeps the environment calm and consistent for the dogs already staying with us. In lieu of frequent tours, we provide transparency in other ways: an immersive website with detailed photography, weekly virtual tours of the property, and fast, direct communication with our team. If you would like to visit in person, please begin by initiating the reservation process and telling us about your dog. If there is a fit, we will provide the option of scheduling an on-property appointment. Our process is efficient, and you will receive a response within one hour.

Can I book a stay without becoming a member?

Yes. Non-members are welcome to book, but nightly rates and shuttle fees are higher, and certain benefits—such as included supplements or medical administration—are reserved for members. Membership is designed for owners who board more than once, as the savings typically cover the fee after a single stay.
